About Adolph Gottlieb

My master artist is Adolph Gottlieb, born in 1903 in New York, who painted primarily from 1941-1954. He studied at the Art Students League Of New York with Robert Henry and John Slone, then moving to Germany and France and studied at Academie de la grande chaumiere in Paris. He was considered one of the first color field artists. His Sleep Mask, which is the inspiration for my project painting currently resides in the Guggenheim museum in New York.

I wanted to revisit the relief tile and be able to hang it on the wall. I first started by making the relief tile as a base for everything, and then scored and slipped little 3d objects onto the tile. I only had about 1 and a half weeks to do this so unfortunately I could only get one firing, but if I were to get another one I would glaze the 3d objects a neutral color, and glaze the background multiple bright colors, like lemon and hot tamale, making the neutral colors stand out.

Final Project

This was going to be a vase that I put globs of paint on, and used a brush to getthe look of paint strokes and make the vase look like the Starry Night piece by Van Gogh.
